Coffee table base sizing guide

Choosing the right base keeps your table stable and comfortable to sit at. Two things matter: the height of the base and the size of the top it needs to support.

Match the base height to the table type

  • Coffee tables: around 40 to 45cm high, for lounge and low seating areas.
  • Dining and cafe tables: around 72cm high, to pair with standard dining chairs.
  • Bar and poseur tables: around 105 to 110cm high, to pair with bar stools.

Match the base to the top size

As a general rule, the base should sit within the edge of the tabletop so guests have legroom, while still being wide enough to keep the table steady. For round tops up to 70cm a single column base works well. For larger or rectangular tops, choose a wider base plate or a twin base for extra stability.

Choosing the material

  • Cast iron: the heaviest and most stable option, ideal for high traffic venues.
  • Stainless steel: corrosion resistant and suited to modern interiors and covered outdoor areas.
  • Powder coated steel: affordable and available in matte black or gloss white.
  • Timber: a warmer look for relaxed interiors.
